42'7' <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Walker, seconded by Commissioner Ray, the 1965-1966 <br />Secondary Road Program as presented by the representatives of the North Carolina <br />State Highway Commission was unanimously adopted. <br />. Chairman Bennett stated that Herbert Holland has resigned his position on the <br />Carrboro Planning Board because he had moved from the Carrboro area. Chairman <br />Bennett suggested that J. Richard Webb be appointed to fill the unexpired term of <br />Herbert Holland on the Carrboro Planning Board. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Walker, seconded by Commissioner Ray, it was moved <br />and adopted, that J. Richard Webb of Route 2, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, be appoi <br />ed to fill the unexpired term of Herbert Holland on the Carrboro Planning Board. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Ray, seconded by Commissioner Walker, it was moved <br />and adopted, that the County Forrestry Warden be contacted and requested not to iss <br />any burning permits unless it was an emergency request until the drought had been <br />relieved. The Clerk was instructed to forward said request to the proper person. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Ray, seconded by Commissioner Walker, it was moved <br />and adopted, that the Clerk of the Board write the Governor and request that the <br />necessary legal steps be taken to close the hunting season in Orange County until t. <br />drought is relieved. <br />There being no further business to come before the Board,this meeting was ad- <br />journed to meet again on Wednesday, December 15, 1965. <br />Betty June Hayes <br />ria,ti <br />Harvey Bennett <br />Chairman <br />December 15, 1965, Meeting of the Board of Commissioners <br />The Board of County Commissioners of Orange County met in special session on <br />Wednesday, December 15, 1965, in the Commissioners room of the Courthouse at 7:30 p.m. <br />Members present: Chairman Bennett and Commissioners Ray and Walker. <br />Members absent: Commissioners Cleveland and Smith <br />A delegation from the Chapel Hill and Schley American Legion Posts was present <br />to discuss with the Board the position of County Veterans Service Officer. The mem- <br />bers of the delegation present were of the opinion that this position could best be <br />filled by inducing Mr. Wrenn, the present Veterans Service to stay on with the County <br />If a substantial increase in salary was necessary to retain Mr. Wrenn, then they <br />would be in favor of making this increase. <br />Two persons were interviewed for the Veterans Service Officer vacancy during the <br />evening, George Boyd of Efland and Clayton Haithcock. No action was taken concerning <br />the Veterans Service Officer position pending further consideration of the sugges- <br />tions advanced by the American Legion delegation. <br />Tom Ward, Welfare Director, was present. He and the County Administrator dis- <br />cussed with the Board the possibility of entering the Federal Food Stamp Plan and <br />abandoning the Commodity Distribution program presently being operated by the County. <br />The State Board of Welfare has advised the County that if they receive notice of <br />the County's willingness to enter the Food Stamp Program, our name will be placed on <br />a list being prepared for the Department of Agriculture in Washington. Some counties <br />from North Carolina will be accepted from this list. <br />After a lengthy discussion of this program, Commissioner Ray moved the County <br />advise the State Department of Welfare.kf our willingness to come under the Food <br />Stamp Plan if we are selected by the Department of Agriculture. Commissioner Walker <br />offered a second, and when a vote was called, there were three ayes and 0 noes. <br />The meeting then adjourned. <br />Betty June Hayes <br />Clerk <br />Harvey Bennett <br />Chairman <br />Thursday, December 23, 1965 <br />The Orange County Board of Commissioners met in special adjourned session for <br />the purpose of conducting a canvass of the ballots cast in the December 21 Fire Dis- <br />trict election held in the Colony Woods Section. <br />Members present: Chairman Harvey D. Bennett, Commissioners William C. Ray, <br />Carl M. Smith, and Henry S. Walker. <br />Members absent: Commissioner Gordon B. Cleveland <br />Mrs. George Coltrane, Registrar for the Colony Woods Fire District Election, de- <br />livered to the Chairman and to the Clerk an abstract of votes cast in said election. <br />The Registrar stated there were 67 persons who registered for the Special Election.
