I also have lived experience with substance use in my family, including losing my father
to overdose. This combination of professional and personal background drives my passion for
harm reduction and makes me committed to supporting community-based solutions.
Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board
I want to serve on this board to help reduce overdose deaths and expand access to life-saving
resources like Narcan. As someone personally impacted by the opioid crisis, I'm passionate
about harm reduction and supporting evidence-based approaches that prioritize dignity, health,
and community care. I'm especially committed to uplifting people who are often overlooked or
stigmatized and ensuring their needs are represented in local policy decisions.
How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints?
I bring the perspective of a young Southern woman who grew up in rural, low-income Appalachia
on the Virginia—West Virginia border, where the opioid crisis has hit especially hard. I have lived
experience with generational substance use disorder and overdose loss in my family, and I now
work in scientific research at Duke. My voice reflects both personal connection to impacted
communities and a public health—oriented, harm reduction mindset.
Do you have any personal or business interest(s)that could create a conflict of interest
(either real or perceived) if you are appointed to this board?
