Passmore, Director <br />TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough 732-8181 <br />Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br />Durham 688-7331 <br />Mebane 336-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To renew the agreement for the Department on Aging's Eldercare Division to <br />provide on-site service coordination for the residents of the First Baptist and Manley Estates <br />senior housing complex in Chapel Hill. <br />BACKGROUND: The Master Aging Plan included an objective (Goal II-B/a-2) to assist the new <br />Housing and Urban Development (HUD) 202 Housing for the Elderly Project in the provision of <br />support services and study contracting provision of service coordination, HUD makes available <br />to its properties a monthly stipend per resident far the purchase of such service. Often the <br />service coordination is contracted to an outside consultant. If the consultant encounters a <br />situation that needs further assistance, it makes a referral to the Department on Aging or other <br />local care provider. Since 2002, the Department on Aging has provided the service <br />coordination directly, utilizing temporary staff and social work interns under the direction of the <br />Eldercare Program staff, The Department on Aging staff will assess, monitor and arrange <br />community services for residents such as transportation, medical appointments, Meals on <br />Wheels, and senior center participation. This will result in better access to community <br />resources and to more intensive case management services, should the need arise. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: There are na County funds required. Funds collected from Manley <br />Estates ($15/resident/month) for this service will be used for temporary personnel expenses. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the agreement <br />and authorize the Chair to sign the Agreement to provide service coordination for the residents <br />of the new First Baptist and Manley Estates senior housing complex in Chapel Hill, subject to <br />final review by staff and the County Attorney. <br />
