4 <br /> 1 ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> 2 <br /> 3 PROCLAMATION <br /> 4 <br /> 5 September 2025 - "Orange County Preparedness Month" <br /> 6 <br /> 7 WHEREAS, it is critical for every community, business, family, and individual in Orange County <br /> 8 to be prepared for natural and man-made disasters, including tornadoes, flooding, and hurricanes, <br /> 9 as well as disease outbreaks like COVID-19; and <br /> 10 <br /> 11 WHEREAS, in 2018, Hurricane Florence brought significant rainfall in September causing <br /> 12 widespread power outages and flooding resulting in more than $26 million in damages; and <br /> 13 <br /> 14 WHEREAS, the National Weather Service has confirmed four separate tornadoes that have <br /> 15 impacted Orange County since 2019; and <br /> 16 <br /> 17 WHEREAS, this year Tropical Storm Chantal brought significant rainfall and an EF-1 tornado that <br /> 18 caused widespread flooding and destruction resulting in the tragic death of one person and over <br /> 19 $75 million in residential, commercial, and public infrastructure damages; and <br /> 20 <br /> 21 WHEREAS, year to date, Orange County has already experienced significant severe weather <br /> 22 activity to include four tornado warnings, twenty-two Severe Thunderstorm Warnings, and <br /> 23 fourteen Flash Flood or Flood Warnings; and <br /> 24 <br /> 25 WHEREAS, community members can take a few simple steps — creating an emergency supply <br /> 26 kit, making a family disaster plan, and staying informed —to help make preparedness a personal <br /> 27 priority and improved health a goal in our community; and <br /> 28 <br /> 29 NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, recognize Orange County <br /> 30 Emergency Services - Emergency Management Division along with emergency managers <br /> 31 throughout the nation, who have collaborated to recognize September as National Preparedness <br /> 32 Month, and the Board joins them in encouraging Orange County residents to stay informed and <br /> 33 prepared; <br /> 34 <br /> 35 FURTHERMORE, the Orange County Board of County Commissioners hereby declares <br /> 36 September 2025 as "Orange County Preparedness Month". <br /> 37 <br /> 38 This the 41h Day of September, 2025. <br /> 39 <br /> 40 <br /> 41 Jamezetta Bedford, Chair <br /> 42 Orange County Board of <br /> 43 Commissioners <br /> 44 <br /> 45 <br /> 46 A motion was made by Vice-Chair Hamilton, seconded by Commissioner Fowler, to <br /> 47 approve and authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation. <br /> 48 <br /> 49 VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> 50 <br />
