Upcoming Tourism Strategy Study Magellan Scope of Services This study will officially launch in September, and a key part of the process will be one-on-one interviews between Chris and key stakeholders.
Study Objectives: The goal of this engagement is to produce actionable insights that will help guide the bureau’s long-term strategy. Specifically, the study will: 1.Identify the tools and resources needed to grow tourism across Chapel Hill, Carrboro, andHillsborough. 2.Evaluate how Orange County can remain competitive in an evolving Triangle tourismmarket. 3.Recommend specific programs and strategies to increase visitation, support thehospitality sector, and expand meetings and conventions.
About the Consultant: Chris Cavanaugh brings over 30 years of tourism experience, including more than two decades consulting with Convention and Visitors Bureaus across 18 states and nearly half of North Carolina’s counties. His past work in college towns like Athens, GA, and Tuscaloosa, AL, makes him uniquely qualified to understand our local context. He is also North Carolina’s leading expert on occupancy tax policy and serves on the finance committee of the Buncombe County Visitors Bureau, where he formerly chaired the board. His strategic planning approach is grounded in stakeholder input, and your feedback as a board member will directly shape the final recommendations.
Next Steps- Chris will be scheduling interviews with key stakeholders including
hotels, UNC partners, Board members and local restaurant owners beginning in
September with the eventual goal being a 2026 plan for building the next
chapter of tourism in Orange County.
Exhibit 1
Docusign Envelope ID: D898B664-2FD1-43EE-873C-731E9D4509F6
