48
Kimley> Horn Carolina Friends School- Orange County, NC
Executive Summary
Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. has performed a Traffic Impact Analysis for the
proposed Carolina Friends School located on located on Friends School Road in Orange
County, North Carolina. It is assumed that the school will increase the total enrollment by
approximately 50 students to a total of 503 students at full build-out of the site. At
buildout, 227 students will utilize the new Upper School building proposed on the
western portion of the campus, leaving 276 on the existing Lower/Middle School campus
utilizing the existing access on Friends School Road. Access to the new building is
proposed by upgrading the existing, gated gravel driveway that intersects Mt. Sinai
Road. Approximately 6 buses serve the school for field trips and recreational purposes
only, no impact to trip generation. The development is proposed to be built-out by the
year 2026.
This report presents trip generation, distribution, traffic and queueing analyses, and
recommendations for transportation improvements required to meet anticipated traffic
demands in conjunction with the development. The following traffic conditions were
studied:
• Existing Traffic (2024)
• Projected Background Traffic (2026)
• Projected Build-out Traffic (2026)
Analyses were performed for the AM peak hour and school PM peak hour:
■ Friends School Road at Existing School Driveway
■ Friends School Road at Mt. Sinai Road
■ Mt. Sinai Road at Upper School Driveway (future unsignalized)
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Municipal School
Transportation Assistance (MSTA) "School Traffic Calculator" was used to determine the
trip generation potential of the schools.
Table ES-1
School Traffic Generation I Vehicles
Land Daily AM Peak Hour School PM
Use Land Use Intensity Peak Hour
Code In Out In Out In Out
MSTA Lower School 276 stud. 298 297 188 154 109 143
MSTA Upper School 227 stud. 247 258 174 93 73 165
ES-1
