26
Carolina Friends School Biological Inventory Report Orange County, N.C.
mussels,in the form of shell, was not observed during the site visit. If future project
designs result in potential 404/401 water impacts, an official survey for Atlantic
Pigtoe will likely be requested by the USACE to comply with necessary
environmental permitting.
The North Carolina Natural Heritage Program (NCNHP) Summer (July) dataset
identifies one known Atlantic Pigtoe Element Occurrence (EO) within 1.0 mile of
the PSA. This EO (EO No. 87) is located in New Hope Creek, approximately 2.9
river miles upstream from the Pine Mountain Creek/New Hope Creek confluence.
This EO is considered extant and was last observed on August 24, 2018.
In addition to these federally protected species, which were identified via an IPaC
search, three other federally listed species are also known from Orange County
(Table 3). These species were likely not identified by IPaC due to their historical
ranking within the county. As an added precaution, habitat assessments for these
species were also conducted and the results are presented below.
Table 3. ESA federal listed species considered historical from Orange County, NC
Scientific Name Common Name Federal Habitat Biological
Status Present Conclusion
Echinacea laevigata Smooth coneflower E Yes No Effect
Lindera melissifolia Pondberry E No No Effect
Rhus michauxii Michaux's sumac E Yes No Effect
Smooth coneflower
USFWS Optimal Survey Window: late May—October
Biological Conclusion: No Effect
Suitable habitat for smooth coneflower is present within the PSA in the form of
roadside/utility rights-of-way and field edges. A review of the NCNHP Summer
(July) 2024 dataset indicates one known smooth coneflower EO within 1.0 mile of
the PSA. This EO (EO No. 15) is considered historical and was last observed on
June 3, 1933. Smooth coneflower was not observed within the PSA during the
September 20 site visit.
Pondberry
USFWS Optimal Survey Window: February—March; September—October
Biological Conclusion: No Effect
Suitable habitat for pondberry, in the form of wetland depressions or bogs, is not
present within the PSA. A review of the NCNHP Summer (July) 2024 dataset
indicates no known pondberry EO's within 1.0 mile of the PSA.
6 December 2024
