24
Carolina Friends School Biological Inventory Report Orange County, N.C.
• Sciurus carolinensis (gray squirrel)
• Strix varia (barred owl)
• Odocoileus virginianus (white-tailed deer)
• Meleagris gallopavo (wild turkey)
• Didelphis virginiana (Virginia opossum)
• Procyon lotor(racoon)
• Canis latrans (coyote)
These communities do possess some large, noteworthy specimen trees (Figure 4). The
forests appear to be naturally regenerated stands. Generally, trees that are located along
property boundaries, or on property corners, will show the highest degree of character and
age; however, some large diameter trees were observed within these stands.
Piedmont Headwater Stream Forest (Typic Subtype)
This community type occurs along headwater streams within the study area. Species
indicative of this area include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Liriodendron tulipifera var. tulipifera (yellow poplar)
• Acer rubrum var. rubrum (red maple)
• Liquidambar styraciflua (sweetgum)
• Fagus grandifolia var. caroliniana (American beech)
• Pinus taeda (loblolly pine)
• Ligustrum sinense (Chinese privet)
• Elaeagnus umbellata (autumn-olive)
• Microsteium vimineum (Japanese stiltgrass)
Like the Dry-Mesic Oak-Hickory and Mesic Mixed Hardwood forests, sunlight availability
to the forest floor is limited. As a result, overall floral and faunal diversity is low when
compared to communities exhibiting greater amounts of sunlight availability and structural
heterogeneity. Faunal species indicative of this community type are the same as those
previously listed for the Mesic Mixed Hardwood community(i.e., forest interior species).
Piedmont Bottomland Forest (Typic Low Subtype)
This community type occurs along Pine Mountain Creek within the study area. Species
indicative of this area include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Liriodendron tulipifera var. tulipifera (yellow poplar)
• Acer rubrum var. rubrum (red maple)
• Liquidambar styraciflua (sweetgum)
• Fagus grandifolia var. caroliniana (American beech)
• Pinus taeda (loblolly pine)
• Platanus occidentalis (American sycamore)
• Microsteium vimineum (Japanese stiltgrass)
4 December 2024
