22
Carolina Friends School Biological Inventory Report Orange County, N.C.
Table 1. Coverage of terrestrial communities in the PSA(continued)
Community Dominant Species (Scientific Name[Common Coverage
Name]) (ac.
Liriodendron tulipifera var. tulipifera (yellow
Piedmont Headwater poplar)
Stream Forest(Typic Carpinus caroliniana var. virginiana (inland 3.3
Subtype) American hornbeam)
Lindera benzoin s icebush
Pinus taeda (loblolly pine)
Pine Forest Liquidambar styraciflua (sweetgum) 14.2
Chima hila maculata (spotted wintergreen)
Total 108.5
Maintained/Disturbed
The Maintained/Disturbed community type is comprised of school grounds that are
regularly upkept and maintained (e.g., parking lots, buildings, ball fields, track, horse
pastures, and a residential homestead).
Vascular plant species occurring within this community type include, but are not limited
to, the following:
• Native Flora
o Andropogon virginicus var. virginicus (broomsedge bluestem)
o Rubus pensilvanicus (eastern blackberry)
o Liquidambar styraciflua (sweetgum)
o Pinus taeda (loblolly pine)
o Juglans nigra (black walnut)
o Acer rubrum var. rubrum (eastern red maple)
• Non-native Agricultural or Exotic Flora
o Narcissus sp. (daffodil)
o Lonicera japonica (Japanese honeysuckle)
o Elaeagnus umbellata (autumn-olive)
o Ligustrum sinense (Chinese privet)
o Festuca sp. (Fescue)
The higher percentage of"edge" habitat and sunlight availability within this community
type tend to promote increased abundance and recruitment of non-native exotic flora. It
also yields higher floral and faunal species richness, as well as more diverse vertical and
horizontal structural heterogeneity. As a result, this community type receives higher than
average animal use, compared to the remaining closed-canopy natural community types
within the PSA. Animal species that show increased use of this community type include,
but are not limited to, the following:
2 December 2024
