ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: June 8, 2004 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. 5-~ <br />SUBJECT: Agreement Renewal with UNC School of Dentistry far Pediatric and General <br />Practice Dental Resident Services for Health Department <br />DEPARTMENT: Health PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): <br />Agreements <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Rosemary Summers, ext 2411 <br />TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough 732-8181 <br />Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br />Durham 688-7331 <br />Mebane 336-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To renew the agreements with the UNC School of Dentistry for a pediatric dental <br />resident and for a general practice dental resident for the Health Department, <br />BACKGROUND: The Health Department utilizes the services of a pediatric dental resident one <br />day per week in Hillsborough to extend the services of the department to very young children, <br />generally 3-5 year olds, The pediatric dental residents allow the department to treat these <br />younger children and those children with more complicated dental problems, The resident <br />treats approximately 14 children each day for a total of 672 children that otherwise would not be <br />seen. This contract remains at the same level as previous years at a total cost of $2,400 per <br />year to the County, <br />The Department also utilizes the services of one full-time equivalent general practice dental <br />resident for four and one-half days per week. The general practice residents provide services <br />at both the Hillsborough and the Carrboro dental clinics. The resident annually provides <br />services to approximately 1,664 patients per year. The residents work under the supervision of <br />the Health Department's dentist, The total cost of the contract for FY 04-05 is $47,233, which <br />includes a 1 ''/z% increase aver the current year, <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: The annual cost of both agreements is $49,633 per year, These <br />services represent an average cost of $22 per patient visit, The contract amounts have been <br />included in the Health Department's budget request for fiscal year 2004-2005, <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the agreements <br />subject to the approval of the 2004-2005 budget and authorize the Chair to sign, <br />
