GENERAL DESCRIPTION
<br /> Orange County, founded in 1752, is located in the north-central portion of the State on the Piedmont
<br /> Plateau . The County lies approximately midway between the cities of Atlanta, Georgia and Washington,
<br /> D . C . Interstate Highway 40 connects to Interstate Highway 85 within the County. Interstate Highway 85
<br /> connects the region west through Greensboro to Charlotte and Atlanta, and connects to Interstate Highway
<br /> 95 just south of Richmond, Virginia.
<br /> There are four municipalities in the County : the Towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro in the
<br /> southeastern part of the County and the Town of Hillsborough and the City of Mebane in the central corridor
<br /> of the County along Interstate Highway 85 and Interstate Highway 40 . The Town of Chapel Hill is the
<br /> largest municipality in the County and the home of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . The
<br /> Town of Hillsborough is the County seat.
<br /> The County is part of the Durham-Chapel Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area, which also includes
<br /> the Research Triangle Park, a major complex of research and research-oriented manufacturing facilities .
<br /> Interstate Highway 40 connects the County directly with the Research Triangle Park and Raleigh-Durham
<br /> International Airport. The City of Mebane, home of most of the County ' s major manufacturing employers,
<br /> is on the westernmost boundary of the County . A major portion of the City of Mebane lies in neighboring
<br /> Alamance County . North of Interstate Highway 85 the County is mostly rural, with a mixture of farming,
<br /> residential and light industrial and commercial uses .
<br /> The County is approximately 401 square miles in area, of which approximately 177 square miles
<br /> are unincorporated, 39 square miles are farmland, 132 square miles are forested, and 53 square miles are
<br /> urbanized .
