19 <br /> 1 DSS encourages all individuals to "Wear Blue" on Friday, April 4, 2025, to kick off Child Abuse <br /> 2 Prevention Month. Social Services is planning to provide awareness materials to community <br /> 3 members at the Sportsplex Family Fun Day on April 5, 2025. <br /> 4 <br /> 5 The Board is asked to support this effort and to encourage the community to become more aware <br /> 6 of the issues impacting children and families. <br /> 7 <br /> 8 Brittany Mann, Program Manager for Orange County DSS, introduced the item. <br /> 9 Commissioner Carter read the proclamation: <br /> 10 <br /> 11 ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS <br /> 12 <br /> 13 PROCLAMATION <br /> 14 CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH <br /> 15 April 2025 <br /> 16 <br /> 17 WHEREAS, child abuse and neglect is a serious problem affecting every segment of our <br /> 18 community, and finding solutions requires input and action from everyone; and <br /> 19 <br /> 20 WHEREAS, in Fiscal Year 2023-2024, 574 reports of suspected child maltreatment were <br /> 21 assessed by child protective services in Orange County; and <br /> 22 <br /> 23 WHEREAS, child abuse can have long-term psychological, emotional, and physical effects that <br /> 24 have lasting consequences for victims of abuse; and <br /> 25 <br /> 26 WHEREAS, children who are loved and nurtured grow up to be healthy, creative, and productive <br /> 27 community members; and <br /> 28 <br /> 29 WHEREAS, it is the goal of Orange County to improve the quality of life of all children who live <br /> 30 here; and <br /> 31 <br /> 32 WHEREAS, we acknowledge that we must work together as a community to increase awareness <br /> 33 about child abuse and to continue to promote the social and emotional well-being of children and <br /> 34 families in a safe, stable, and nurturing environment; <br /> 35 <br /> 36 NOW, THEREFORE we, the Board of County Commissioners of Orange County, North Carolina, <br /> 37 hereby proclaim April 2025 as "Child Abuse Prevention Month" and call upon all residents to join <br /> 38 together to prevent child abuse. <br /> 39 <br /> 40 THIS IS THE 18t" DAY OF MARCH, 2025. <br /> 41 <br /> 42 <br /> 43 <br /> 44 Jamezetta Bedford, Chair <br /> 45 Orange County Board of Commissioners <br /> 46 <br /> 47 A motion was made by Commissioner Carter, seconded by Vice-Chair Hamilton, to <br /> 48 approve and authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation declaring April 2025 as Child Abuse <br /> 49 Prevention Month in Orange County. <br /> 50 <br /> 51 VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br />
