Global Warming of 1.5°C.

FOOD FOREST AND POND
Carbon Sequestration Rate: According to scientists at NC A&T
University, food forests sequester carbon at a rate of 18.2
tonnes/acre/year. The area that will be developed currently has grass
and shrubs in one area and lightly planted fruit trees in another. Given
the NCA&T figures, we estimate that planting ¼ acre in a fully
developed food forest that is closely maintained and managed will
sequester: 18.2 tonnes/acre/year × 0.25 acres × 50 years = 227.5
metric tonnes CO2
The addition of a small rain catchment pond will accelerate carbon
sequestration on the farm. Taylor et al (reference below) found that
small ponds sequester 79-247g of organic carbon per square meter
annually, a rate 20-30 times higher than woodlands, grasslands and
other habitat types. Our pond will be 21 square meters. If we assume
an average level of pond carbon sequestration (163g) we would
sequester 3.4kg carbon per year in the pond and 171kg over 50 years.
The pond has the additional benefit of creating cooler microclimates in
the surrounding area during the summer months, which supports the
thriving of other plants and animals on our permaculture farm.
References:
https://attra.ncat.org/publication/climate-beneficial-
practices/#:~:text=Forest%20gardens%2Ffood%20forests%20can,(USD
A%20NRCS%2C%202022).
https://esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/fee.1988

Docusign Envelope ID: 61C3903E-05FE-49FE-A6AF-E50B7D61917E
