Please describe any avoided
financial costs or savings
related to the project and over
what period of time those
costs will be avoided/reduced.
Each family will save an estimated $65 per month initially on their
electricity bill, or $780 annually. Without factoring in additional savings
based on electrical rate increases, the savings will be an estimated
$23,400 per household over 30 years.
17. Does your project accelerate
or expand on existing
programs that already show
positive impact?
Habitat is already seeing exciting results for participating homebuyers,
including households which have been able to produce as much energy
through their new solar panels as they used for the entire month. We
hope to build on these successes with the goal of offering solar to all
buyers on lots where it is a viable option.

The proposed project seeks to accelerate and build on these successes
to ensure that solar panels can be a standard practice for Habitat’s new
home construction program moving forward. The support of Orange
County has been a critical accelerator for Orange Habitat’s solar
program; this partnership has led us to become a leading solar Habitat
affiliate in the country. The success of this local initiative and our
previous partnership with East Chapel Hill Rotary for the solar pilot
program has encouraged a discussion between Rotary and Habitat at
the national level and has the potential to transform building practices
in the affordable housing market.
18. Does your project take
advantage of other funding
sources?
To maximize the number of Orange County residents served, Habitat
seeks out a variety of private and public funding sources. We have a
successful history of leveraging investments from local government to
raise private donations. For previous solar installations funded in part
by Climate Action Funds, Southern Energy Management subsidized the
installations to help reduce costs. In previous years, solar panels were
donated by Strata Clean Energy. Strata was unable to continue the
partnership, but Orange Habitat has secured a new partnership with a
solar provider based in Texas to provide solar panels at a significantly
discounted rate.
Docusign Envelope ID: AA482F5E-25D4-439A-862A-65CC63DF3A74
