Project Name: Rooftop Solar Panels for Affordable Habitat Homes
2. Please briefly describe the
proposed project. (100-300
words)
Orange County Habitat proposes to use $100,000 in Orange County
Community Climate Action Grant funds to install rooftop solar panels
on fourteen newly constructed affordable Habitat homes. These
installations will be in Weavers Grove, Habitat’s innovative new
mixed-income community in Chapel Hill.

Habitat serves individuals and families who live or work in Orange
County and earn between 30% and 80% Area Median Income (AMI).
With an average homebuyer family size of three, an estimated 42
people will directly benefit from the solar installations. However, the
benefits of residential solar expand beyond the individual homebuyer.
By decreasing the amount of fossil fuel burned, our entire community
benefits from cleaner, healthier air, and decreased carbon emissions.

Orange County Climate Action funds have been critical to Orange
Habitat in launching our residential solar program over the past several
years, with the goal of including solar panels on all sun eligible Habitat
homes. Habitat is currently using Climate Action funds awarded in the
FY23 cycle to install solar panels on the first homes in Weavers Grove.
When these funds are expended at the end of the calendar year, we
will face a funding gap. An additional award from Orange County will
ensure Habitat can continue its solar program and build additional
program momentum. We hope to leverage the support of Orange
County to access future federal funds through the Inflation Reduction
Docusign Envelope ID: AA482F5E-25D4-439A-862A-65CC63DF3A74
