31
DRAFT/March 28,2025
• Priority Action 5d: Conduct a County-wide outreach program to better
understand farmer and landowner perspectives on transition planning to
support customized approaches to transition planning and conservation.
BENCHMARK/PROGRESS INDICATORS FUNDING/RESOURCES
• Number of farmers/landowners County staff including new
contacted for inclusion in the proposed Ag Viability and
database Farmland Stewardship position
• Number of farmers/landowners Agricultural Preservation Board
with data represented in the members
database Orange County Extension agents
• Number of farmers/landowners
initiating transition or conservation
tans as a result of outreach
Recommendation 6: Establish an Agricultural Viability and Farmland Stewardship
coordinator role in the County. Currently in Orange County, the duties and
responsibilities related to agricultural viability and farmland stewardship are
divided among several staff members, all of whom have other primary job
responsibilities. As illustrated by the Priority Actions outlined in this Plan, the needs
related to agriculture in the County are sufficiently numerous and wide-ranging
to justify a County staff position dedicated to agricultural viability and farmland
stewardship. Other North Carolina counties, including Chatham County and
Wake County, have a staff member dedicated solely to agricultural
development and farmland protection.
• Priority Action 6a: Define the duties of the coordinator role with attention to
complementing and synergizing with the duties of the County's Land
Conservation Manager position.
BENCHMARK/PROGRESS INDICATORS FUNDING/RESOURCES
Job description completed and 0 County staff
approved 0 County Extension agent
• Priority Action 6b: Assign the position a place in the County organizational
structure and allocate funding for it.
BENCHMARK/PROGRESS INDICATORS FUNDING/RESOURCES
• Funding secured Funding required
• Job posted
• Position filled
29
