Fire and Life <br />Safety Date: 2/17/25 Staff: <br />Chris Pendergrass <br />cpendergrass@orangecountync.gov <br />919-245-6125 <br />1. Two separate fire access roads will be required unless homes are equipped with <br />automatic sprinkler systems or dwelling units on a single fire access road shall <br />not be increased unless fire apparatus access roads will connect with future <br />development. <br />Applicant Response: Added as a Fire and Life Safety Note on the Cover Sheet. <br />2. Approved driving surface shall support load of 75,000 pounds. <br />Applicant Response: Note added to Preliminary Plat “Surfacing and structural <br />capacity of the fire access shall be determined at the time of final plat.” <br />3. Roadway shall not exceed 10% in grade. <br />Applicant Response: Added as a Fire and Life Safety Note on the Cover Sheet <br />reading 12% instead of 10% as determined by the Fire Marshal and with the <br />word “Proposed” added. <br />4. Roadway shall be no less than 20’ in width, not including shoulders and or on <br />street parking. <br />Applicant Response: Note added to Preliminary Plat “Width of the fire access <br />shall be determined at the time of final plat.” <br />5. Clearance over roadway shall be no less than 13 ½'. <br />Applicant Response: Added as a Fire and Life Safety Note on the Cover Sheet. <br />6. Cul-de-sacs shall be 96’ in diameter in accordance with Figure D103.1 of 2018 <br />NC Fire Code. <br />Applicant Response: Discussions between Orange County and NCDOT about <br />the turnarounds are ongoing. Per direction from Orange County Planning, note <br />added to Cover Sheet that reads “Turnaround design and associated ROW <br />geometry will be determined on final plat, pending County and NCDOT approval.” <br />7. Recreational fires shall not be conducted within 25’ of a structure or combustible <br />material.
