1
ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: March 18, 2025
Action Agenda
Item No. 8-f
SUBJECT: Dedication of Six (6) Bus Shelters to the Town of Hillsborough
DEPARTMENT: Orange County Transportation Services
ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT:
Nishith Trivedi, Transportation Director,
919-245-2007
PURPOSE: To approve the dedication of six (6) bus shelters to the Town of Hillsborough.
BACKGROUND: Orange County Transportation Services, in collaboration with the Planning and
Inspections Department and Asset Management Services, has successfully completed the
construction of six (6) bus shelters in Hillsborough over a two-year period. These shelters were
constructed between 2022 and 2024. The locations of these shelters are as follows:
• Faucette Mill Road at US 70 (within NCDOT right-of-way);
• NC 86 Southbound at Hampton Point (within NCDOT right-of-way);
• North Churton Street at Hillsborough Police Station (within NCDOT right-of-way);
• Rainey Avenue at Fairview Community Center (Town of Hillsborough property);
• River Park (Town of Hillsborough property);
• Library (Town of Hillsborough property).
The Town of Hillsborough has agreed to assume maintenance responsibilities for the shelters,
provided the shelters are formally dedicated to the Town by the County. Orange County
Transportation Services requests that the Board approve the dedication of the six (6) bus shelters
listed above to the Town of Hillsborough. Upon the Board's approval, Orange County and the
Town will finalize the transfer by presenting the request to the Town Board, which will effectuate
this transfer.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The County would no longer be financially or contractually obligated to
maintain the shelters.
ALIGNMENT WITH STRATEGIC PLAN: This item supports:
• GOAL 4: MULTI-MODAL TRANSPORTATION
OBJECTIVE 2. Increase community awareness of all modes of transportation including
transit, bike and pedestrian, vehicle, and all other modes.
OBJECTIVE 3. Support road projects that address congestion and reduce commute time
using the County' s Complete Streets policy.
OBJECTIVE 4. Coordinate transit investments with municipal and county land use
planning to reduce vehicle miles travelled and to provide more equitable access to
shopping, employment, medical centers, college campuses, etc.
