individuals in the Triangle across five counties (Orange, Alamance,
Person, Durham, and Chatham) that come together to use fire as a tool
for ‘Best Management Practices’ to restore the land and to advocate
for the use of prescribed fire across the landscape. TPBA is led by the
NC Cooperative Extension. By having TPBA as a partner, we will
increase our capacity and expertise to conduct prescribed burns on
these project areas at the Confluence.
28. If this project is not selected
for funding in this round, what
other funding might be used to
support it within the next 5
years?
☒ Other capital or operational funds (and seek additional grant
funding)
☐ None. This is a unique opportunity.
☐ Unknown (please describe):

Criterion 5 - Local Economic Development
This criterion has a maximum score of 3 pts (out of a total of 26 pts).

29. How many Orange County
residents are employed by
your organization?
3
30. What project materials will be
purchased from sources within
Orange County or North
Carolina? What percent of the
total materials do these
represent?
For prairie restoration, seeds will be purchased primarily from North
Carolina suppliers, including Mellow Marsh Farm and Garrett Seed
Company.
For reforestation efforts, trees will be sourced locally. Trees for this
project will be sourced most likely as seedlings from NC Forest Service
or tublings from Mellow Marsh, a locally owned wholesale plant
nursery located in Chatham County.
We will work with a local contractor for the application of herbicide to
the prairie restoration field. We also hope to find a tractor for sale
locally, thus supporting an Orange County dealer. In addition, we will
rent a native seed drill from Orange County.
Over 90% of the funds for this project will be spent within North
Carolina. If a suitable tractor is available for sale in Orange County, then
roughly 75% of the project materials will be purchased in the county.
31. Please describe any other
aspect of your project that is
relevant to local economic
development.
The burning portion of prairie restoration allows for the opportunity to
rent equipment and contract burn experts to work alongside our staff
from local organizations such as Triangle Prescribed Burn Association or
Wildland Forestry LLC. In previous burns, we have also worked with the
local fire department for management of the prescribed burn and use
of equipment such as water tanks.
Once prairie restoration is complete, it is likely we will be able to
contract local farmers to utilize the space for income through
beekeeping.

Docusign Envelope ID: 044C3299-6F90-4782-B8F5-C4A7339F0897
