Please describe any avoided
financial costs or savings
related to the project and over
what period of time those
costs will be avoided/reduced.
By purchasing a tractor, Eno River Association avoids greater costs in
the future associated with renting or contracting to maintain the
Piedmont prairie at the Confluence Natural Area, in addition to the
costs saved for the initial application of seed for the prairie. Because
the tractor purchased will have limited use relative to those used for
full-time agriculture, its lifespan is expected to exceed 50 years.
This project will also utilize volunteers for much of the required labor,
including the planting and maintenance of the reforestation field, some
maintenance of the Piedmont prairie, and much of the preparation for
and execution of prescribed burns. Both costs will be avoided over the
first few years of project implementation and maintenance.
17. Does your project accelerate
or expand on existing
programs that already show
positive impact?
This project expands on the conversion of a 1.8-acre field into
Piedmont prairie that began in 2024 with a prescribed burn. We have
already seen increased resources for birds and pollinators in this field,
including milkweed (Asclepias sp.) and black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia
hirta), in addition to the carbon sequestration from this prairie.
This project also builds on the reforestation of a section of a
bottomland field at the Confluence Natural Area in 2018, where
roughly 50 trees were planted and have successfully established.
18. Does your project take
advantage of other funding
sources?
The prescribed burn conducted at the Confluence Natural Area in 2024
to begin the conversion of a 1.8-acre field to Piedmont prairie was
funded in part by a $5,000 grant from the New Hope Bird Alliance, and
the equipment purchased for this burn will be used for future burns to
maintain the restored Piedmont prairie.
Eno River Association will also be applying for a $1,000 grant from NC
Native Plant Society to cover some of the costs of this project. The
remainder of the costs associated with the project will be covered by
private donations to the Eno River Association.
Docusign Envelope ID: 044C3299-6F90-4782-B8F5-C4A7339F0897
