<br />Page 10 of 24 <br /> <br />o Shade for Schools - Orange County: Leverage the Board Chair’s <br />professional role as the Sustainability Specialist for Durham <br />County, a member of the Triangle Climate Resilience <br />Partnership, to support promotions of shade trees as an <br />alternative cooling strategy. <br /> <br />Chapel Hill’s 2021 Climate Action & Response Plan <br />• Enhance Green Infrastructure: Plant an average of 200 or more canopy <br />trees every year and enact a new green infrastructure ordinance by <br />2022. <br />o Shade for Schools - Orange County: Add to Chapel Hill’s annual <br />tree planting goal at participating CHCPS schools. <br />• Expand Climate Action Education, Outreach, and Awareness: <br />Education, outreach and awareness can help equip our community to <br />understand why climate action and response are important and how it <br />can take action. Our community has expressed the importance of <br />sustainability literacy for children, adults, and businesses. The Town, <br />schools, neighborhoods, places of worship and civic organizations can <br />work together to deliver constructive and collaborative educational <br />programs and outreach to increase participation in climate actions. <br />o Shade for Schools - Orange County: Work together with <br />schools to deliver climate education programs and outreach <br />through the lens of tree plantings. <br /> <br />Carrboro’s 2020 Community Climate Action Plan <br />• Ecosystem Recommendation #4: Tree Preservation, Protection, and <br />Conservation. <br />o Increase public awareness of the intrinsic value and beauty of <br />trees. <br />o Educate citizens about proper tree selection, planting, and <br />care. <br />o Educate citizens about the health of the larger community <br />forest, its importance for both human and environmental <br />health, and ways in which they can support it. <br />o Partner with local government and civic groups to improve and <br />expand the Town’s tree canopy. <br />o Shade for Schools - Orange County: Support Carrboro’s <br />community education and engagement goals on tree planting <br />and care, public health, beautification that results from a <br />larger tree canopy.
