Trees
for the Triangle applauds Orange County’s ordinances that preserve 33% of
acreage from new development and aims to further these tree protection
efforts. Inspired by the success of Chapel Hill’s 2020 tree plantings in
historically underserved neighborhoods - funded by the Orange County
Community Climate Action grant - we plan to expand these benefits to schools
across the County region supported by this grant funding. Our project directly
and indirectly aligns with numerous key actions and recommendations from
the three Climate Action Plans, as detailed below:

Orange County’s 2023 Climate Action Plan
• Equity Goals (Social Justice Goals Resolution):
o Foster a community culture that rejects oppression and
inequity.
o Ensure economic self-sufficiency.
o Create a safe community.
o Establish sustainable and equitable land-use and
environmental policies.
o Enable full civic participation.
o Shade for Schools - Orange County: Advance equity and
environmental justice by planting trees at schools in
underserved areas, fostering a safer, healthier, and more
sustainable environment. Promote community involvement,
economic self-sufficiency, and civic engagement, ensuring that
all students benefit from enhanced green spaces and climate
resilience, and in turn, benefits their teachers, families,
neighborhoods, and communities.
• Green Community Goal (GC 2): Increase the tree canopy community
wide.
o Target: Give away 10,000 tree seedlings in 10 years (1,000 a
year).
o Shade for Schools - Orange County: Plant 260 trees, increasing
the tree canopy community-wide, and distribute 2,600 tree
seedlings, over 25% of Orange County’s target within just two
years.
• GC 2.1.2: Utilize “community scientists,” residents that support tree
inventory efforts; partner with Trees for the Triangle.
o Shade for Schools - Orange County: Fulfill partnership as
Docusign Envelope ID: D22675F9-86C0-429B-8CAD-74E02C6C68FC
