I also believe that the community must work together
and pressure local government to invest in affordable housing.
How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints?
While I have been involved in real estate investment, my endeavors have not been predatory like
many of the transactions I see in the market. I have purchased homes for fair market value,
restored them to a habitable condition, added them to the local rental stock, and then sold them,
typically to first time home-buyers a few years later. However, I have seen the many ways that
other investors, both local and institutional, profit from people who cannot afford to realize the
value in their own home. I believe that my knowledge of the UDO and my experience investing in
local real estate, help me consider the viewpoints of members of the community who benefit
from a rise in housing costs, and who also wield disproportionate political influence. And, I
believe that my personal political orientation informs my desire to create affordable housing
solutions in our community.
Do you have any personal or business interest(s)that could create a conflict of interest
(either real or perceived) if you are appointed to this board?
I am not seeking local funding to develop affordable housing in this area; nor have I encountered
any other conflicts of interest in my position on the Board of Equalization and Review.
Boards/Commissions appointments:
Board of Equalization and Review
Application Date: 2/1/2019
Background, education and experience relevant to this board:
In 2005, 1 moved from New York City to North Carolina to work with a nonprofit involved in prison
reform. Since then, I ve remained in Orange
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
When I first applied to serve on the Board of Equalization and Review, my motivation was simply
to offer my knowledge of the real estate market, market valuations, and market trends, and to
engage in more service work in our County. My two years on the Eq
Conflict of Interest:
After serving for two years on this board, I can say that no conflicts of interest arose; nor do I
foresee any arising.A
Board of Equalization and Review
Application Date: 2/1/2019
Background, education and experience relevant to this board:
In 2005, 1 moved from New York City to North Carolina to work with a nonprofit involved in prison
reform. Since then, I ve remained in Orange
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
With the exception of my consulting work with a handful of local nonprofits, I have not felt
involved in my local community and in local government since my work at Communities in
Schools in 2015. Mark Dorosin encouraged local residents to apply for this
Conflict of Interest:
The truth is, my business interests as a real estate investor could theoretically create a conflict of
interest with the board s activities. However, the type of real estate investment I engage in would
not. I do not purchase tax foreclosures or any other
