47
Support local . • . business
through land use policies and programs.
Orange County will implement measures to support agriculture/farming
as a viable career in our local economy.
The purpose of this policy is to promote and support local agricultural businesses by
implementing land use policies and programs that encourage sustainable farming,
protect agricultural lands, and enhance economic opportunities for local farmers and
food producers. Objectives of this policy include:
• Continue coordination among Planning, DEAPR,and the Cooperative Extension
to ensure farming remains a valued contributor to the local economy, including
programs such as Lands Legacy.
• Promote local agribusiness and agritourism in appropriate locations (such as Rural
Activity Nodes)to support the overall vision and intent of the Conservation and
Growth Framework.Address the broad allowances afforded to these uses per
NC General State Statute 160D-903 and the potential negative impacts on rural
communities from an overabundance of these uses by regulating them through
the subdivision process.
• Support mentorship of farmers and curriculum in local schools to ensure
continuity of agriculture uses.
• Discourage non-residential and higher-density residential land uses away from
farms when reviewing rezoning requests in areas adjacent to farms.
44 PUBLIC REVIEW DRAFT
