52
Integrate healthconsiderations •
all
aspects of planning, zoning, and development to
create a healthier, more . . • •
Orange County will promote the health and well-being of all residents
by ensuring that the built environment supports access to clean air, safe
water, healthy food, physical activity, and social connections.
The intent of this policy is to embed public health principles into the planning, zoning,
and development processes, recognizing the direct relationship between the built
environment and the physical, mental, and social well-being of community members.
By prioritizing health equity in all stages of land use planning, this policy aims to
reduce health disparities, increase access to essential services, and encourage the
development of neighborhoods that promote healthy lifestyles, environmental
sustainability, and resilience to climate change. Objectives of this policy include:
• Promote active transportation and mobility within Rural Conservation
Neighborhoods,Activity Nodes, and support the same in municipalities and their
growth areas.
• Increase access to healthy foods by supporting continued viability of farming and
access to locally produced products.
• Reduce vehicle miles traveled through the realization of strategically located
growth areas for commercial and employment purposes.
• Enhance green spaces and recreation through the design of Rural Conservation
Neighborhoods.
• Incorporate the U.S. Census Bureau's Social Vulnerability Index data to address the
lack of or limited access to County services and facilities that address individual
health concerns, such as parks and recreation facilities, aging services, and
transportation services.
• Promote clean air, water, and environmental quality practices.
ORANGE COUNTY LAND USE PLAN 2050 49
