15
As a wrap up to the education panel, Ms. Schooes-Ross invited Mr. Sutton of the TUL
back to present several strategies for consideration. Those were:
Recognition and support for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools in its hosting
the upcoming Annual Minority Student Achievement Network, an opportunity to
involve students, parents, and educators in assessing the achievement gap and
ways to develop cooperative methods for change.
Recommendation for the two school systems to convene a blue ribbon panel or
task in honor of Brown v. Board of Education to study the overall health of
education, pazticularly the status of African-Americans and the achievement gap.
The panel would also look at No Child Left Behind legislation, recruitment and
retention of minority teachers, and the suspension and drop out rates for minority
students.
