ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: May 18, 2004 <br />Action Agenda , , <br />Item No. __„___~ <br />SUBJECT: Acceptance of Emergency Management Grant Program Funding <br />DEPARTMENT: Emergency Management <br />ATTACHMENT(S): <br />Grant Application <br />Grant Agreement <br />PUBLIC HEARING: (YIN) No <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Rod Visser, ext 2308 <br />TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough 732-8181 <br />Chapel Hilt 968-4501 <br />Durham 688-7331 <br />Mebane 336-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To receive a grant from the State Emergency Management Agency to help support <br />the County program. <br />BACKGROUND: The State provides grants to local governments to help support the local <br />emergency management programs, The grant is based on the county population and a share <br />of the program cost. Counties with over 200,000 population are eligible fora 100% matching <br />cast grant based on certain emergency management functions, Counties with less than <br />200,000 population are eligible fora 50% match, The grants are awarded each year and may <br />vary depending on the federal funding available, <br />Staff pursued applying for the grant as part of the budget process for FY 2003-04 and the <br />County was awarded a grant in the amount of $18,304,26, The County received $19,048,75 in <br />2002-03, $19,289 in 2001-02, and $20,334 in 2000-01. The grant applied for this year will be <br />approximately the same amount as last year, The final amount will be determined after the <br />State receives all the applications, <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: The grant produces funds that will offset a portion of the casts for salary <br />and benefits of the existing Emergency Management Specialist position included in the FY <br />2004-05 departmental budget. The anticipated grant revenue will be included in the <br />recommended Orange County 2004-05 budget, <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board accept the grant and <br />atathorize the Manager to sign the grant award. <br />
