ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: May 18, 2004 <br />Action Agenda ~ <br />Item No. ~ - I <br />SUBJECT: Renewal of Food Waste Collection Contract <br />DEPARTMENT: Solid Waste Management PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Gayle Wilson, 968-2885 <br />Renewal Agreement Pam Jones, 245-2650 <br />TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough 732-8181 <br />Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br />Durham 688-7331 <br />Mebane 336-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To consider renewal of a contract that enables the County Solid Waste <br />Management Department to provide separated food waste collection services to commercial <br />establishments throughout Orange County, and the addition of the collection of animal bedding <br />from UNC -Chapel Hill. <br />BACKGROUND: Far the past five years, Brooks Contracting of Goldston, North Carolina has <br />provided food waste collection and composting services to Orange Community Recycling, <br />Brooks provides storage carts, collects food waste, and composts it at its facility in Chatham <br />County. UNC -Chapel Hill collects and delivers animal bedding to Brooks contracting far <br />composting, This contract represents a renewal of the existing agreement to collect from <br />establishments willing to separate food waste, including UNC-Chapel Hill locations, and adds <br />the animal bedding collection to the agreement, <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: The cost of this contract is estimated at $157,000 annually (Food waste <br />$117,000 and animal bedding $40,000), It is projected that Brooks Contracting will collect up to <br />1,250 tons of food at $77.25 /ton, Any amount over that tannage would cost an additional <br />$56,65 per ton, In additicn, it is projected that 400 tons of animal bedding will be collected at <br />$40 per site per pickup. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the service <br />contract renewal with Brooks to collect and compost food waste and authorize the Chair to sign <br />the agreement, subject to final review by Staff and the County Attorney. <br />
