3641
31. Please describe any other
aspect of your project
relevant to local economic
development.
The students (and teachers) trained in the USS program will
receive practical, real-world work experience in sustainable
stormwater and landscape engineering, providing them with job-
ready skills that they can utilize to obtain employment after school,
during summers, and upon graduation. Demetrius Thompson,
owner of Triangle Outdoor Living LLC in Durham, North Carolina,
recently hired a public school graduate in Person County who
participated in the BETC program in 2021. Indeed, NC stormwater
needs are expected to exceed $2.76 Billion over the next 15
years: https://efc.sog.unc.edu/north-carolina-stormwater-needs-
exceed-2-76-billion-over-the-next-15-years/.

Criterion 6 - Amount and Duration of Engagement
This criterion has a maximum score of 3 pts (out of 26 pts).

32. Please briefly describe the
target population to benefit
from the project.
1) Our efforts are focused on the areas identified as underserved
by the NC DEQ Community Mapping system, which is part of
the Environmental Justice Program.
https://ncdenr.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html
?id=1eb0fbe2bcfb4cccb3cc212af8a0b8c8
2) The teachers at CW Stanford Middle School serve students
from the area highlighted below. According to NC DEQ, 66.31%
of the population is minority, and 56.04% are low-income. This
area does not qualify for EPA funding, but we have teachers
engaged in the program serving this community.
3) The second area from which teachers and property owners
participate is near Carrboro Elementary School. NC DEQ
reports that 32.26% of the population is minority, and 45.69%
is low-income. This area qualifies for EPA funding.
4) The third area identified is in Carrboro's Tom’s Creek area,
which floods. We are working with fixed-income elderly and
low-income minorities in this watershed to assist with
developing flood resilience.
33. How many people will
benefit from your project?
Direct beneficiaries = 10 teachers + 50 students + 30 low-
income property residents (owners & family) = 90 people, of
whom we expect the majority to be minority or low-income
(see discussion below).

Indirect beneficiaries (from a reduction in air and water
pollution and associated state and federal fees) = the entire
population of Orange County = ~150,000 people
(https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/orangecountynorthcarolina).
Docusign Envelope ID: 7E7D300B-F83F-4917-A8A3-638B79C7D566
