3141
23. If you are proposing to
collaborate with other
organizations on this
project, please briefly
describe their relevant
experience with the
project and the target
population.
1) The founder of Burt’s Bees Foundation, Matt Kopac, supported USS’s
pilot program (entitled BETC) in Durham throughout its existence and
on behalf of numerous organizations, including Don’t Waste Durham,
Green New Deal for Durham Coalition, Ellerbe Creek Watershed
Association, NC Sierra Club (Headwaters Group), New Hope
Audubon Society, People’s Alliance Economic Justice Team, Sunrise
Durham Hub, The Climate Reality Project (Durham Chapter), and
Toxic Free NC (https://indyweek.com/news/durham/cow-buffers-and-
a-bit-of-controversy), We credit Matt’s connection with the welcome
support we received from the Burt’s Bees Foundation when we
requested an invitation to apply for seed funding. Burt’s Bees doubled
our funding in the second cycle and has encouraged us to apply for
more — to be used to teach and train Triangle teachers, students,
and community members and pay them to install sustainable
stormwater projects throughout the Triangle. Our EPA funding has
been used for projects in line with these installations. The remaining
EPA funding, restricted to the Bolin Creek Watershed, will be used in
projects scheduled for this Fall and next Spring. We plan to apply for
additional EPA funding for installations in other impaired watersheds
in Orange County and the Triangle. Noting that EPA funding generally
covers only 60% of installation costs, the additional funding OCCCA
provides is imperative to match the 40% of funds required to enable
100% free installations on historically underserved Orange County
properties.

3) As detailed above, the Triangle Community Foundation provides
funding to train Triangle teachers and pay for associated stormwater
installation costs in the Triangle. The goal of the Triangle Community
Foundation is to “generate economically and environmentally resilient
communities” (https://trianglecf.org/impact/sustainable-communities/),
which has been ongoing since 1983 (https://trianglecf.org/the-
foundation/).

4) Jeanette O’Connor (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeanette-o-connor-
8b617251/), manager of Lands and Waters South (a sustainable
landscape non-profit company in Carrboro;
https://www.landsandwaterssouth.org/#:~:text=Lands%20and%20Water
s%20South%20(located,with%20hands%2Don%20conservation%20proj
ects), who serves as our landscape contractor and incorporates and
oversees BMP plantings by USS teachers and children.

5) Fernando Guzman, the Hispanic owner of Aguilar’s Lawn &
Landscape company, is our principal site preparation contractor in
Orange and Durham Counties (https://www.yelp.com/biz/aguilars-lawn-
and-landscape-durham)

6) Frank Brown, owner of CFB Contracting LLC, Selma, NC
(https://www.linkedin.com/in/frank-brown-b3801210/), is our site-
preparation contractor. He has worked for over ten years in the pilot
Durham County program.

7) Demetrius Thompson, owner of Triangle Outdoor Living and
Landscaping (https://www.linkedin.com/in/demetrius-thompson-
87a3a766/) in Durham, NC, recently hired a public school graduate in
Person County who participated in the Durham pilot program in 2021.
Docusign Envelope ID: 7E7D300B-F83F-4917-A8A3-638B79C7D566
