29
Page 2 of 2 Stephen Marshall
Boards/Commissions applied for:
Opioid Advisory Committee
Background, education and experience relevant to this board:
In my professional life, I am a professor of epidemiology in the school of public health at the
University of North Carolina, where I direct the UNC Injury Prevention Research Center. Opioid
overdose is one of five research areas at my Center. We have multiple staff members who
specialize in overdose prevention. I supervise and interact with numerous experts in overdose
prevention. My group worked with the NC Attorney-General s office to build the
NCOpioidSettlement.ORG website.
Reasons for wanting to serve on this board:
Opioid overdose prevention is a passion of mine. With 10 North Carolinians dying every hour,
and 100,000 overdose deaths nationally in 2020, 1 feel its time for me to step up and serve my
community in a tangible way. I am grateful that mt professional work at UNC has allowed me to
work in the important area of overdose prevention, and I would appreciate the opportunity to
further contribute to overdose prevention in a tangieble through community service on the
Orange County Opioid Advisory Committee.
Contribution to the diversity of viewpoints on this board:
I bring the perspective of immigrant from another westernized nation, New Zealand. I lived the
first 30 years of my life in New Zealand, and the second 30 years of my life here in Orange
County NC. (My partner grew up in Chatham county, we meet in New Zealand). I recognize that
my life experience and those of others around me reflects, and is filtered, by the differences in
our backgrounds and upbringing. I believe in listening to others, incorporating diverse viewpoints
into decision-making, and giving power to all peoples. Commitment to Diversity, Equity,
Inclusion, and Justice is fundamental to a successful democracy.
Conflict of Interest:
I don t see how a conflict of interest could arise. However, in the event of a potential conflict of
interest, I would reach out to the leadership of this advisory committee to disclose any potential
COI in advance. I have no commercial interests, services, or products that relevant to the work
of this advisory committee. My interest in serving on this committee is purely in terms of
contributing my expertise.
Boards/Commissions appointments:
Other Comments:
This application was current on: 10/15/2022 7:15:11 AM Date Printed: 10/18/2022
