I am also a member of the unintentional
death committee of the NC Child Fatality Task Force, a NC state legislative taskforce
devoted to preventing deaths in state residents 18 years and under. I am also a member
of Community Church of Chapel Hill Unitarian Universalist. and have served on the board
and numerous committees of that church. I am a member of the Heritage Hills swim club
and my children used to swim for the North Carolina Aquatic Club when they were
younger (my two children are adults now).
Opioid overdose prevention is a passion of mine. With 10 North Carolinians dying every
hour, and 100,000 overdose deaths nationally in 2020, 1 feel its time for me to step up
and serve my community in a tangible way.
In my professional life, I am a professor of epidemiology in the school of public health at
the University of North Carolina, where I direct the UNC Injury Prevention Research
Center. Opioid overdose is one of five research areas at my Center. We have multiple
staff members who specialize in overdose prevention. I supervise and interact with
numerous experts in overdose prevention. My group worked with the NC Attorney-
General s office to build the NCOpioidSettlement.0RG website. I am grateful for the
chance to work in such an important area, and would appreciate the opportunity to
contribute to overdose prevention through community service on the Orange County
Opioid Advisory Committee.
Past Service on Orange County Advisory Boards:
none
