184
The Fiddlehead Corner Master Plan responds to this demand by providing a range of
choices of high quality that are sized for the comfort, convenience and budget of older
adults.Specifically, residences will average 1,250 sf and will consist mostly of one-and
two-bedroom units. Units will include a variety of housing types-single family, multiplex,
and multifamily buildings-to meet the preferences and desires of a diverse group of
individuals. They will adhere to principles of universal design,a term that refers to the
design of buildings, products or environments to make them "barrier-free" -accessible to
people, regardless of age, disability or other factors. Universal design incorporates
elements such as wide doorways, handrails, and level entry. Only a small fraction of the
existing housing stock of Orange County meets these criteria.
It is very encouraging to see that the Fiddlehead Corner(FC) plans go well beyond the basic
requirements of housing to specifically respond to Goals 1, 2,4, 7 and 8 of the MAP 2022-
27.Goal 1 is to optimize the variety and usability of outdoor spaces and buildings that
enhance social interactions for older adults. FC will have walking trails, outdoor areas for
recreation and events,a community garden and meditation spaces.
Goal 2 is to increase access to,and awareness of,affordable, safe, and equitable mobility
options for older adults in all parts of Orange County. Crucially, the community is compact
to promote ready access to the community center even for those with limited mobility or
using personal mobility devices. FC will coordinate closely with transportation providers to
assure that community members needing assistance are able to reach desired destinations
such as shopping venues, entertainment and medical facilities. Universal design will be
applied to planning for all shared indoor and outdoor spaces.
Goal 4 is to promote diverse and accessible opportunities for participation and engagement
of older adults. The community center will serve as the hub for the social life of the
community-a place to gather daily to be with others and pursue a wide variety of activities
together.Social interaction protects against the isolation and loneliness that many older
adults experience. FC cultivates community values that embrace all races, all faiths, all
cultures and countries of origin, and all sexual and gender orientations.
Goal 7 seeks to ensure that the community has accessible and affordable resources to
support individual health and well-being goals throughout the aging process. Fiddlehead
Corner has an entire team dedicated to planning and providing a continuum of care in the
community to ensure that the needs of the community are covered.Specifically, resources
will be available to allow most community members to"age in place",with their increasing
care needs provided for as needed, rather than forcing them to leave the community for
such care.
Goal 8 relates to communication and information. FC will have high-speed internet
connectivity with which residents can use web search and other tools to learn of resources.
FC is well aware of Orange County aging services and will inform its members about them.
Members will be informed of volunteer engagement opportunities in the larger community.
