108
Hands Four Development Cooperative
5W Orange County, NC
Page 3
the headwater of a tributary to Collins Creek in the eastern/center of the property. We
observed several locations of diabase float across the site, but no diabase outcrops were
observed. "f=loat"are loose pieces of rock that are not connected to an outcrop. When many
pieces of float of the same rock-type are found in a defined area, it can indicate that same rock
-type is present in situ nearby, or at some depth at the location where the float is found. We
observed clusters of diabase float that were spread over 54- to 60-foot-long areas along cleared
pathways.. We noted the location of each occurrence by recording the latitude and longitude of
each area. Those locations are shown in Figure 4.
Well Site Recommendations
GMA employed the well siting principles generally recommended by Heath (1984) for water-
supply wells in the Piedmont. This approach focuses on siting wells near draws on the sides of
the valleys of perennial streams where the bordering ridges are underlain by substantial
thicknesses of regolith. Wells should be located low in the drainage basin, and near the
intersections of regional structural features (regional joints, foliation fractures, or faults). These
structural features often correspond with local stream valleys. However, the primary criteria for
well site recommendations for this site is the proximity to diabase dikes. The locations of the
diabase float that we observed fall directly on the location of the diabase dikes identified by
Geo-Solutions (Figure 4). Therefore, we conclude that we have documented the presence of
diabase dikes on the subject property.
GMA identified four potential well locations for this site. We used published geologic literature,
Feld observations by geologists, and magnetic survey data to aid us in understanding_ the
geology at the site and to select suitable well sites. The proposed well locations are shown in
Figure 4. All the proposed well sites are located as low in the drainage basin area as possible,
but most importantly they are each associated with inferred locations of diabase dikes. Most of
these sites can be easily accessed along existing pathways and should require minimal clearing
by the driller. While the wells are labelled A, B, C, and D, their Labelling order is not intended to
indicate any order of significance. GMA suggests you start with a well site that has easy access
for a drill rig (like A or B), or the site that best fits your development needs.
We have identified four potential well locations: Three are near, or in, cleared pathways (wells
A, B, C); one may be difficult to access (well D). Our well B is about 50 feet northeast of your
Client Well Site #2 which we understand you already have permitted by DEQ. The DEQ may
accept that location as being dose enough to their approved location to not require another site
visit on their part. Contact DEQ for that determination. Please see Figure 4 for well locations.
