104
Water Supply for Fiddlehead Corner
A water system will be designed and built under the aegis of Hands Four Development Cooperative to
supply all the residences, common buildings and other needs of the Fiddlehead Corner community.
Because no municipal water source is available at the location, community wells will be the water
source. There will be a central plant for tanks and pumps, with a distribution network of mains and
branches to supply housing clusters and common buildings. Project consultant is David Barcal, P.E.,
of MacConnell and Associates. The system will be managed by a professional water system operator.
With the knowledge that well yields in Orange County are highly variable and unpredictable, water
availability and well siting were thoroughly investigated. Evidence that flow yields in the amounts
needed are likely to be available on this property is found in the USGS Water-Resources
Investigations Report 00-4286, "Investigation of Ground-Water Availability and Quality in Orange
County, North Carolina". Figure 5 from this report (below), based on reported well yields, maps the
obtained flows across the county. Wells in the zone in which this property is located typically had 50-
75 gpm yields, the amount needed for our purposes. Fiddlehead Corner is depicted as "FC" on the
figure.
7915' 70'07'30' 79"
36°15' —
-—-—-^--— —-—-
i r
I dip
  r
J I
I
3r'or3o' I 'f
I
I
f
36°
I
I e
  t
L +?
