Gensler | 24 Gensler | 25
f.OCNC Experience & Qualificationsf.OCNC Experience & Qualifications
Orange County Greene Tract
Master Plan Community Engagement
Chapel Hill, NC
Gensler is working with Orange County, the Town of Chapel Hill,
and the Town of Carrboro providing Community Engagement
Services for the Greene Tract Master Plan, a jointly owned 167 acre
site adjacent to a historically black neighborhood and the landfill.
The Greene Tract Master Plan is an opportunity to
advance the voice of a marginalized community
and deliver a vision of a community that has been
crafted over forty years of discussion on this site.
The historic Rogers Road community has local
origins that date back as far as the 1700s, and in the
1960s, current residents began exploring, building
relationships, and creating memories on the Greene
Tract. When the Orange County Regional Landfill
was placed adjacent to the neighborhood in 1972,
residents were faced with adverse environmental
and health impacts. They advocated for themselves
for many years, seeking environmental justice and
improvements to the area until the landfill was
closed in 2013. They were promised recreational
facilities, sewer line hook-ups, clean water, and
improved infrastructure in exchange for the
landfill’s negative effects but these promises by the
County were never realized. This, along with planning
efforts for the Greene Tract that stalled for several
decades, led to significant distrust. This community
engagement effort is the conduit for the Greene Tract
Master Plan to deliver on the community’s vision and
rebuild long term trust and accountability between
residents and local institutions.
Our team has provided monthly meetings with a
Stakeholder Advisory Group, interactive workshops,
interviews with adjacent property owners, monthly
newsletters, and reports sharing the evolution of
insights from engagement activities into Guiding
Principles for the Master Plan team. A final report
documenting the community engagement process
will be delivered at the conclusion of the project.
167 acres
Expected Completion
October 2024
Services Provided
Site Tour
Community Engagement
Equity Strategy
Stakeholder Mapping
Planning Research
Monthly Focus Groups
Online Survey
Stakeholder Interviews
Workshops
Presentations
Newsletters
Promotional Banner
Let’s plan for the future of
our community, together.
Register to attend by
scanning the QR code or
visiting https://bit.ly/
GreeneTract
Spanish, Mandarin,
Burmese, and Karen
interpretation services
will be provided.
GREENE TRACT COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS
LAUNCH WORKSHOP
PLAN WORKSHOP
CELEBRATION EVENT
Sunday, April 14th
2:00 - 5:00 PM
Sunday, June 9th
2:00 - 5:00 PM
Sunday in September
Date & time to be confirmed
Morris Grove Elementary
215 Eubanks Rd
Chapel Hill, NC 27516
Morris Grove Elementary
215 Eubanks Rd
Chapel Hill, NC 27516
Location is being finalized
and will be posted on the
website.
