ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: December 5, 2005 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. ~~ <br />SUBJECT: Resolution Honoring Chapel Hill Creamery <br />DEPARTMENT: Economic Development PUBLIC HEARING: (YIN) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): <br />Resolution <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Dianne Reid, 245-2326 <br />PURPOSE: To recognize Chapel Hill Creamery and its owners -Flo Hawley and Portia <br />McKnight -upon the recognition of Hickory Grove cheese as one of the top ten cow's milk <br />cheeses in the South, <br />BACKGROUND: After extensive research and training in cheesemaking, Portia McKnight and <br />Flo Hawley opened the Chapel Hill Creamery in 2Q01. The Creamery currently has 16 Jersey <br />cows and produces specialty farmstead cheeses marketed at farmers markets, to restaurants, <br />and to local grocers. <br />The Southern Foodways Alliance, an affiliate of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at <br />the University of Mississippi, recently conducted a cheese competition of Southern cheeses. <br />The judges selected Chapel Hill Creamery's washed rind Hickory Grave cheese as one of the <br />ten best cow's milk cheeses, <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: None <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the attached <br />resolution commending Chapel Hill Creamery and its owners for their recent honor and for <br />providing a model innovative agricultural enterprise, <br />
