16
#19 Ranked Project —The ArtsCenter— Energy Efficiency Project
Applicant(Collaborators): N/A
Funding Requested: $10,000
Recommended Funding Level: $0
Total Score (Out of 26 pts): 14.3
Project Description:The ArtsCenter's renovated 1974 downtown building features over thirty windows, spanning a
total of 1,000 square feet. Many of these floor-to-ceiling windows allow abundant natural light, which is invaluable
for creating art. However, they also place significant strain on the building's 27-year-old HVAC system, resulting in
cold interior spaces and uncomfortably warm exterior rooms during the summer and parts of fall and spring.
Installing window films offers a cost-effective, immediate solution that will enhance comfort while significantly
reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Project Benefits:Applying films to our western and southern-facing windows will block up to 98%of UV rays and
reduce energy bills by 38%.This initiative will benefit all visitors to the ArtsCenter by promoting awareness and
education on energy-efficient practices.
Reviewer Comments:The CFE considered this project simple and easy to install. For future grant applications, we
recommend increasing its impact on local economic development and providing more specific details. The project
may have limited visibility unless signage is included. We also suggest exploring a Duke Energy grant as an additional
funding option. The HRC sees potential to serve disadvantaged communities but noted the lack of direct engagement
with these populations.
#20 Ranked Project — Kolibri Farm — Cultivation, Cooking and Community
Applicant(Collaborators): N/A
Funding Requested: $60,077
Recommended Funding Level: $0
Total Score (Out of 26 pts): 14.0
Project Description:The funds will be used to purchase equipment that will support an increased number of
participants in the communal garden and expand the land dedicated to regenerative cultivation. Electric appliances
for the kitchen will also be acquired, powered by a solar array, enabling participants to prepare healthy meals in an
eco-friendly environment. These funds will help facilitate community activities and shared meals, fostering stronger
connections within the local community.
Project Benefits: Regenerative farming helps sequester carbon, while providing fresh produce and prepared meals to
individuals who may not have access to transportation or the income to afford fresh food from local markets.
Additionally, the project offers educational benefits through hands-on participation. By working in the garden,
participants gain valuable knowledge while actively contributing to the community's well-being.
Reviewer Comments:The CFE supports the mission and goals of the project but recommends prioritizing community
connections before moving forward. The project's impact on local economic development and GHG reductions is
currently limited. The HRC highlighted that the project promotes food security and community engagement through
communal gardening, with a strong focus on racial and social equity. It also empowers low-income families by
providing the opportunity to grow their own food.
#21 Ranked Project — Spring Crest Farms —Solar Well Pump
Applicant(Collaborators): N/A
Funding Requested: $18,000
Recommended Funding Level: $0
Total Score (Out of 26 pts): 12.4
Project Description:Spring Crest Farms is a small,family-owned and operated beef cattle farm that supplies locally
raised beef products to Orange and Alamance County restaurants and directly to consumers. They are implementing
