ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: May 4, 2004
Action Agenda
Item No. ~„ -
SUBJECT: Hurricane Awareness Week Proclamation
DEPARTMENT: Emergency Management PUBLIC HEARING: (Y!N) No
ATTACHMENT(S):
Proclamation
INFORMATION CONTACT:
Eric Griffin, 968-2050
TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough 732-8181
Chapel Hill 968-4501
Durham 688-7331
Mebane 336-227-2031
PURPOSE: To designate the week of May 16th through 22nd, 2004 as Hurricane Awareness
Week.
BACKGROUND: The National Weather Service has proclaimed the week of May 16th through
22nd, 2004 as Hurricane Awareness Week. The Orange County Department of Emergency
Management encourages all residents to use this time to check their emergency kits, ensuring
that they include fresh food, water, and medications, This is also a proper time far residents to
inspect for dead or dying trees near or on their property and to take proper action to prevent
them from causing damage during strong storms.
Those persons with special needs should check with their families and healthcare providers to
update plans on how they will be cared for during and after an emergency, particularly if special
equipment or medication is necessary.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no significant financial impact to Orange County.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board adopt the proclamation
designating the week of May 16th through 22nd, 2004, as Hurricane Awareness Week in
Orange County, and encourage residents to learn more about severe weather preparedness.
