The student population
we serve is disconnected or at-risk for disconnection from school, and are adjudicated
or otherwise court involved. Pulling from the Chapel Hill/Carrboro and Orange County
school systems that demonstrate alarmingly disproportionate rates of out-of school
suspensions for youth of color compared to their white counterparts, our work
deliberately centers the experiences of these black and brown students served while
extending our efforts to impact the school environments these students navigate to
balance the scales of equity, decrease the achievement gap and inequity in access to
resources and opportunities in schools and the community at large. While our efforts
largely support basic and immediate needs of students disconnected or at-risk of
disconnection from school, we also work to continually assess our organization's role
in dismantling wider systems of oppression, and ground critical partnerships in this
same effort.
Student voice is integral in shaping Boomerang programs. For ATS, we collect student
feedback regarding their experience (i.e., sense of belonging, degree to which they felt
heard and respected) during their time at Boomerang during program exit, and use
this data to evaluate and adapt programming to best meet identified student
needs. Our Bounce Back program is a youth-led program in which youth share
feedback that guides curricula development and Social and Emotional skill-building
opportunities. Specifically, the service learning component of the Bounce Back
program model empowers students, as a collective, to choose the target service
population and project that they complete during the program year.

This year, we are working to create a logic model and program framework for a youth
council with participants from both the ATS program and Bounce Back program to
ensure student voice is included in a meaningful way at the program decision-making
level. We will recruit students in the spring and have slated training and orientation for
this group to begin in summer 2024.
Docusign Envelope ID: 1E46DA1E-0260-4212-A023-FEA4EE5C1439
