Project Goals The goal of the festival is to celebrate African American culture. W e will
showcase predominately local African American artists and other artists of
color through the medium of art, music, dance, drama, and poetry.
Attendees should leave with a greater appreciation of African American
Culture and exposure to different art forms.
Audience Description Participants and audience members are expected to be predominantly
African American. At the last festival, there were over 400 African
American participants that included chapter members, artists, and vendors.
Other audience community members included over 60 W hite participants,
20 Hispanic/Latino participants, and around 5 Asian participants.
90% of the audience/community members were African American.
Over 30% were children as participants or audience members.
Location Description The festival will take place at Hargraves Community center which is located
downtown Chapel Hill. Hargraves is a historical landmark for African
Americans in Chapel Hill. It was originally known as the Negro Community
Center and it was renamed in 1973 after W illiam M. Hargraves. The
building was built to be a safe space for black people. Many prominent
African American organizations and people have held events on the
campus. It is necessary that we celebrate African American Culture in a
place that played a pivotal role in the plight of African Americans in Chapel
Hill.
Hargraves Community center provides accommodations to meet the
accessibility needs of community members by being equipped with ramps
and accessible parking spaces. The event takes place outdoors and is
Sensory-Friendly.
Artist Description W e intend to engage musicians, singers, dance groups, community choirs,
spoken word artists, a DJ, community mural artist and face painting artists.
All artists will be local to Orange, Durham, or Chatham county and belong to
the the BIPOC community. This is will be our third year sponsoring the
festival and we intend to give priority to artists that were engaged to be a
part of the 2023 festival. Despite awesome planning and implementation for
the April 2023 festival, the weather caused the event to be rescheduled
and unfortunately the rain date was rained out as well. Below is a list of
artists we are planning to contact.
Community Mural with Mayanthi Jayawardena
Face painting with Magic Ballard
Singer Jasme Kelly
Line Dance Instructor Robbin Sutton
BUMP Youth Choir
MC Coco Fillpina
Epitome band
Carolina Elite Dance Group
Singer Christian Foushee Green
Docusign Envelope ID: 65D787F0-450A-4479-AF01-20CDDD52421F
