Project/Program
Summary
I would like to use the Artist Project Grant funding to make Bad Art Club
100% free for participants to attend. The funding would be used to cover
the cost of myself as lead artist for time in curriculum development, set-
up/breakdown of class, teaching time, time to coordinate class logistics,
and marketing. It would also cover the cost of each guest artist. I hire 1
local contributing guest artist for each class. Guest artists also participate
in curriculum development, teaching, sourcing supplies, and promotion.
I am submitting this application for my company's first and core program
Bad Art Club (BAC). Bad Art Club is a space for new artists, non-artists,
and those that love to create to engage in low-stakes art-making where we
focus on the process of making art, not the outcome. BAC champions the
mental (calming), emotional (safety), social (togetherness), and physical
(skill-building) benefits of making art.
I have run Bad Art Club out of Eno Arts Mill for 17 straight months, and
have experienced abounding positivity surrounding this class. Not only did
it launch my career as a creative entrepreneur, it has supported the
creative careers of at least 38 artists living in and around Orange County
through contracts and jobs related to BAC. Out of BAC was born W eird
Productions in Durham, the Bad Art Market (funded by an APG last year),
and the FOLK show at Eno Arts Mill. 100s of people have attended BAC,
read our newsletter, and joined our text list. Several profiles have
documented the success of BAC including Chapelboro Radio/The Hill and
The Underline.
Attendees of BAC say they feel like a kid again, that it keeps them
accountable to doing art, and that it changes their mood when they attend.
The first year, I operated the class on a sliding scale where participants
paid anywhere from $0-30 to attend. W e sold out most of the first 6
months. However, I realized that I was exploiting myself at that price range
and needed to change the price to support my own well-being. In 2024, I
changed the price to $40 with scholarships available. I recognize that this
creates barriers to some in our community, and want to remove those
barriers without sacrificing my own boundaries.
This project will continue to take place at Eno Arts Mill for our October and
December meetings. In 2025, the class will likely continue at EAM, with
Present Day on Main as a location that has also agreed to host BAC if
needed. 2025 meetings will be held in February, March, April, and May.
Community partners include Eno Arts Mill (location), TJ Mundy with Loving
You Quietly (marketing services & class assistance), and Grow Your W orld
(2023/24 sponsors).
This funding would cover 6 classes, once per month, occurring from
October 2024 - May 2025 (no class in Nov. & Jan.), held on the 4th
Saturday of the month.
Docusign Envelope ID: CD805924-E172-4469-AB18-059F16D3CD8D
