Organization <br />Description <br />The Chelsea Art Theater Inc (DBA Chelsea Theater) is a non-profit <br />arthouse cinema that is dedicated to bringing the world of film to the <br />Triangle and bringing our local community closer together -- all in a <br />welcoming, comfortable, and friendly environment. The Chelsea presents a <br />dynamic mix of first-run, independent, feature, and documentary films, <br />ranging from works by internationally known directors to films by new and <br />emerging filmmakers based globally and here in North Carolina. <br />Film is an artistic medium with the power to engage, inspire, educate and <br />entertain. It opens a window on the world through which audiences can <br />navigate the complexity of the human experience, the beauty of the natural <br />world, and better understand some of the greatest challenges of our time. <br />Through creative programming, the Chelsea provides a platform for shared <br />experience, conversation, and expression. W hether through thematically <br />organized film series that explore a variety of relevant topics or through <br />repertory and classic films, the Chelsea is a unique community resource. <br />Many of our programs involve collaborations with UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke <br />University, and community groups and feature faculty members and other <br />local experts to introduce films and discuss a range of social, <br />environmental and cultural themes. As the only arthouse theater in Triangle <br />the theater serves and enriches Orange County and beyond. <br />The Chelsea’s board of directors is comprised of individuals with <br />backgrounds in corporate and nonprofit leadership, higher education (Duke <br />and UNC faculty specializing in film and music), marketing and sales, <br />finance, and film . The board includes men and women with approximately <br />one quarter from Black or Latino heritage. Staff changes in the past year <br />have made the organization stronger and utlize the talents of the staff: <br />Now, there is a full time operations manager and a full-time programmer; <br />the executive director is part time, in order to focus on development while <br />providing oversight; there is a part time marketing manager and part time <br />(ten hour per week) social media coordinator. There are seven part-time <br />ticketing and concessions personnel who include college students and <br />retirees. The Chelsea is open six days a week, including major holidays. <br />Mondays are reserved for special programs and rental events.
