Project Director Title Art Teacher <br />Project Director <br />Phone <br />(919) 942-6491 <br />Project Director <br />Email <br />jgreene@chccs.k12.nc.us <br />W hat are you <br />requesting funding <br />for? <br />A specific program or project <br />Project/Program <br />Summary <br />A native American potter and member of the Haliwa-Saponi tribe will be <br />invited as a visiting artist to FPGB Elementary School where students will <br />learn different methods used in pottery (such as hand coiling, pinch pots, <br />and hand building. Additionally, they will learn how art plays a major role in <br />the Native American lifestyle; how American Indians make pottery; how <br />they tell their stories through clay; and how pottery has been used in the <br />past and how it is used today. Pre- and post-visit activities will include use <br />of books highlighting social emotional skills. Books include Many Shapes of <br />Clay by Kenesha Sneed, Dave the Potter by Laban Carrick, and Josephine <br />by Jeanette W inter. <br />Project Start Date <br />(no earlier than July <br />1, 2024) <br />January 1, 2025 <br />Project End Date (no <br />later than June 30, <br />2025) <br />May 1, 2025 <br />Project Goals A;; 4th grade students at FPGB Elementary School will be provided access <br />to a challenging , diverse and culturally relevant, standards-aligned <br />curriculum which is student-centered and will propel their educational <br />growth and achievement. Specifically, students will learn from a Native <br />American potter. They will have the opportunity to learn about Native <br />American history and art. Ms. Lynch will lead a discussion with students <br />about American Indians in North Carolina. She will bring a collection of her <br />pottery for students to see. Students will learn how art plays a major role in <br />the Native American lifestyle, how they make pottery, and how they tell <br />stories through clay and how pottery has been used in the past--and how it <br />is used today. They will be taught about natural resources used to make <br />pottery and the different methods used to mold clay.
