Audience Description Smith Middle School 8th graders would be the original audience for the <br />composition that Mr. Casey creates. They would not only learn to play the <br />piece together as a full ensemble, they would also get to learn more from <br />him about composition, different musical styles, and musical performance. <br />Then the SMS community would hear the composition being performed at <br />an evening combined orchestra and band concert. Finally, judges at an <br />annual middle school competition (at Carowinds) would hear and grade the <br />performance in the Spring of 2025. The composition could be played by <br />SMS students for years to come. <br />Location Description The new musical piece would be practiced, played and performed at Smith <br />Middle School. The Spring competition would be held at Carowinds <br />(Charlotte, NC). <br />Artist Description Kieran Casey is a bi-racial composer/director originally from Richmond, <br />Virginia. He received his B.A in Music Education and Composition at <br />Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2023 and is currently <br />residing in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He is passionate about film scoring <br />and culture and his future plans regard a masters study in Film scoring and <br />a Doctorate in Ethnomusicology. Along with composing, educating is a <br />huge part of Kieran’s life. Ms. Neville and students will get the word out <br />to the school community about the concert. <br />How will you <br />evaluate the success <br />of the program? <br />To evaluate the success of this program, students will be surveyed on how <br />they were impacted by this opportunity, what they learned, and what they <br />thought about being able to play an original piece of music.
