Project Goals Student Learning Outcomes: <br />1- W orking with a living, locally based female composer who is a Pulitzer <br />Prizewinner (Jennifer Higdon) <br />2- Creating a performance as a democratic, self-governed ensemble, <br />without a conductor <br />3- Learning from professional chamber music coaches in order to create <br />high-level performances of chamber music masterworks <br />4- Collaborating with peers of diverse cultural backgrounds, building skills of <br />listening and empathy, wordless communication, and problem-solving <br />5- Engaging with works by composers from historically underrepresented <br />groups within classical music <br />6- Creating a meaningful and dynamic performance experience <br />incorporating the composer, performer, and listener. <br />Audience Description MYCO appeals to, and serves, a culturally diverse cross-section of <br />participants and audience members. This project culminates in a free, <br />accessible concert in Moeser Auditorium at UNC Chapel Hill. <br />1- Participants (MYCO student body) <br />This past year, about sixty pre-college students from Chapel Hill and <br />beyond participated in MYCO. MYCO's student body is diverse ethnically, <br />economically and culturally. Racial demographics for the 2023-24 students: <br />East Asian 38.9%; W hite/Caucasian 27.1%; Mixed race 15.25%; South <br />Asian 11.8%; Hispanic 3% ; Black 3%. MYCO meets all demonstrated <br />financial need for qualified applicants; during the past year, 24% of <br />MYCO's students received financial aid. MYCO has been a 501(c) <br />organization since 2008. <br />2- Concert Audience <br />Moeser Auditorium in Hill Hall at UNC Chapel Hill seats 430 people. <br />Community members from Orange County and beyond attend MYCO <br />concerts, particularly since MYCO is the only performing arts organization <br />in the Triangle area to offer unconducted chamber orchestra performances! <br />The MYCO concerts offer a unique opportunity for local residents to hear <br />live performances of works by living composers like Jennifer Higdon <br />alongside those of other diverse artists like MYCO alumni Quenton Blache, <br />Daniel Bernard Roumain, Kenji Bunch, and more.
