The principles state that in
our work we are guided by: (1) Racial equity lens. The Partnership brings an explicit,
not exclusive, racial equity lens to its work. Embedded in this perspective is to
understand how structural racism operates within the systems that serve our
children, which leads to disproportionately poor outcomes. As we create equity in
serving young children, we envision that we will be unable to predict outcomes solely
on race. (2) Diversity informed and culturally responsive foundation. The
Partnership works within a framework that is sensitive to diversity and responsive to
cultural differences. We have hosted racial equity trainings for early care professionals,
developed a Community of Practice supporting Spanish-speaking educators, and
engaged in racial equity training as part of staff development.
This initiative grew out of our work with the Orange County Campaign for Grade Level
Reading and the NC Pre-K program. The Campaign included more than 30
representatives from 19 agencies and organizations across Orange County, including
parents and NC Pre-K child care providers. Most of these organizations worked with
underserved and under-resourced children and their families as we sought to plan
strategies to support the literacy development of children from birth through grade 3.
We have incorporated changes in the initiative in response to parent and child care
provider feedback and have added different elements to capture various interests.
Docusign Envelope ID: CAC7EC7C-77BA-407E-AAC1-F02C0C75525F
