Cirruculum and Enrichment The MES PTA Cultural Arts Program enriches our school's arts education curriculum with carefully selected artists and programs that complement grade-level themes and curricula. Each year, teachers integrate these programs using provided instructional materials before and after presentations, fostering deeper connections and extended engagement with the concepts introduced. Collaborative efforts among grade-level teachers ensure consistent integration across subjects, reinforced by specials teachers in art, music, and library classes. Our fourth-grade face jug initiative merges art with North Carolina's state history curriculum, vividly illustrating the historical significance of face jugs among North Carolina slaves in the mid-1800s. In alignment with Common Core standards, Mr. Shabazz tailors his fifth- grade residency to include poetry packets and hands-on guidance in crafting and presenting original poetry. This supportive environment encourages students to share and celebrate their creative achievements, building both artistic skills and a sense of community. Our collaboration with Diali Cissokho will introduce students to the vibrant rhythms of African drumming through a school-wide assembly and workshops designed for third graders. This initiative aims to broaden students' cultural awareness and appreciation through experiential learning of traditional drumming techniques and rhythms. Similarly, the Carlota Santana Spanish Dance Company immerses students in the expressive art form of flamenco through an engaging assembly. By exploring the dynamic cultural heritage of flamenco dance, this initiative deepens students' understanding and appreciation of Spanish cultural traditions, enhancing their overall artistic and cultural education.
