Deerfield Beach, FL Greeley, CO Oakland Park, FL Grand Junction, CO KCI has been retained again by the city to assist them in securing new solid waste disposal and recyclables processing facilities. KCI will be assisting in the preparation of solicitation documents and throughout the negotiation and contract finalization process. KCI, as a partner with LBA Associates, is conducting a Solid Waste Diversion Study evaluating a broad range of policy, programs, and service options to dramatically increase waste diversion. Work entails strategic assessment, impacts on customers and service providers, capital and operating costs, municipal code requirements, and implementation requirements. KCI is providing the City of Oakland Park with solid waste technical assistance regarding special bulk waste and side door collection operations as well as a review of the city’s can and container deposit program and Solid Waste Ordinance updates. KCI, as a partner with LBA Associates, has begun work on a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) feasibility study that considers options for city and regional capacity as well as ability to handle a range of collection methods including multi-material, dual stream, and single stream. 3 | Summer 2023 New Assignments On May 1 Mitch Kessler attended WasteExpo in New Orleans and made a presentation titled “10 Keys to Successful Public-Private Partnerships.” The presentation centered on the steps needed to develop a successful public- private partnership and what needs to be included as part of a successful agreement between partners. Randy Rudd attended the equipment show to get the latest updates on industry technology. Bethany Jewell was invited to speak during the Appalachian State University’s Energy Summit on June 8. Speaking to university representatives across the U.S., her presentation covered the critical need of how to revamp a university diversion program. Miriam Zimms, Randy Rudd, and Kyle Richardson attended the Recycle Florida Today (RFT) conference from June 20-22 in Bonita Springs, FL. Miriam Zimms attended her last Board meeting after serving and contributing for six years. This was Miriam’s second time serving on the board making her total contributions on the Board of nine years. Miriam continues to serve her time as the Membership Chair of RFT. At the inaugural Florida Composting Council’s (FLCC) Association conference co-located with the RFT conference on June 21 in Bonita Springs, Miriam Zimms presented on the Florida Organics Recycling Center of Excellence (FORCE) project and walked attendees through how to use the FORCE website (www.floridaforce.org) for establishing, expanding, or revitalizing organics recycling programs throughout the state. Miriam Zimms also hosted a community expressive arts table during the RFT- FLCC conferences that allowed attendees to create, explore and have some fun.
