Orange County, North Carolina
Proposal - Waste Characterization Study

Orange County WCS KCI Proposal
36
this material to assess the generation rate and composition of each material stream and calculate
the capture rate of recycles. For the participation study, a KCI crew followed a recycling collection
truck on five different days for the entirety of its route and counted the number of recycling carts
that were set out and collected. This data was compared to the number of households on the route
and the number of households subscribed for recycling to calculate the recycling setout rate.
Domanic assisted the project manager on all aspects of the study including coordinating with the
city, its hauler, and the landfill, developing maps to collect material for the capture study,
overseeing field work, analyzing data, and preparing the final report. This study provides critical
data on the performance of its recycling program and considerations as it transitions to universal
recycling.
✓ Recyclables Composition Studies, Greensboro, NC
KCI has conducted four two-week recyclables composition studies for Greensboro and will be
conducting another next year.
